National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – What does it mean?
National: The NDIS is being introduced progressively across all states and territories.
Disability:The NDIS provides support to eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability. Early intervention supports can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.
Insurance:The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind if they, their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need.
Scheme: The NDIS is not a welfare system. The NDIS is designed to help people get the support they need so their skills and independence improve over time.

Permanent and significant disability: A permanent disability means your disability is likely to be lifelong. A significant disability has a substantial impact on your ability to complete everyday activities.
Supports and services: Assistance or products that help a person in their daily life and help them participate in the community and reach their goals.
Early intervention: Providing support to a person, either a child or an adult, as early as possible to reduce the impacts of disability or developmental delay and to build their skills and independence.
NDIS services offered at OVAHS
OVAHS is registered with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and can help you to access the supports you need.
We provide:
Support co-ordination, including help choosing the right support services;
Assistance with travel and transport; and
Individual and group activities.
Occupational therapy.
What is support coordination?
Support coordination helps you to make the best use of your supports in plan. Support coordination is a capacity building support which helps you to:
Understand and use you NDIS plan to pursue your goals
Connect you with NDIS providers, community, mainstream and other government services
Build your confidence and skills to use and coordinate your supports.
A support coordinator or specialist support coordinator delivers support coordination services.
We at OVAHS are participant focused and we will work with you to find the right provider, and manage any issues that may arise as you implement your NDIS plan. Our aim is to work with you to build your ability and confidence to manage and coordinate your services.
OVAHS Support Coordination provides you with a dedicated Support Coordinator who will work with you to connect you with providers that best meet your needs. Our Support Coordinators will discuss your goals and how we can work together to implement your NDIS plan.
There are three levels of support coordination that can be included in your plan:
Support connection – This support is to build your ability to connect with informal, community and funded supports enabling you to get the most out of your plan and pursue your goals.
Support coordination – coordination of supports: This support will assist you to build the skills you need to understand and use your plan. A support coordinator will work with you to ensure a mix of supports are used to increase your capacity to maintain relationships, manage service delivery tasks, live more independently and be included in your community.
Specialist support coordination – This is a higher level of support coordination. It is for people whose situations are more complex and who need specialist support. A specialist Support Coordinator will assist you to manage challenges in your support environment and ensuring consistent delivery of service.
You may also wish to focus on a specific goal in your NDIS plan, such as those related to finding suitable home and living supports. You can use your support coordination funding to work with a support coordinator who has the skills, knowledge and experience to meet your specific needs.
